FRIENDS ONLY

I thought I should include an entry to indicate that most of the stuff in my journal is friends-locked and explain a little bit about that. Fic and some fannish stuff is the exception. A couple thoughts on why you may or may not want to friend me:

Things I love:
My kids. My family. My friends.
Insane liberals
Kiefer Sutherland and almost everything about 24 until the end of 8x17;)
BSG
Books, words, and ideas
Writing fanfic
Irony and sarcasm
Laughing at idiocy
Intelligent, respectful debate
Learning about anything and everything I'll never have the opportunity to experience myself
Profanity

Things I hate:
Actual embodied evil from below the lowest rung of hell, Donald Trump
Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and everyone like them. No, seriously. If you fangirl Ann Coulter, we are probably not a good LJ matchup.
The NRA
Republicans who want to sink Obama's legislation just to watch him fail
Intolerance
Nationalism
Fundamentalism
Materialism

I may edit this as I think of others. If you want to friend me, comment on this entry and it's likely that I'll friend you back. I do like to know something about the people on my friends list, so give me a hint as to what you think we have in common:)

FO banner of excellence by [livejournal.com profile] dealan311. You ROCK, Kay:)

can we be friends? i love your friends too! and your fam! no, seriously!! and i hate rush. i think we have in common that we once were elliot stabler obsessed, we have ridic ocd tendencies, and we never can't be schmultsy when it comes to the kiddos we love. so can we be friends now? goods. but maybe we should talk about materialism, oky? only because of my jcrew obsession.

watch your mailbox, there's soething on the way.

also, i ran in to my BEST student at the bars tonight. in the smashed-people mob on the way for shots. we were pressed up against each other and all, "hey, how's it going!" then i wanted to die. shitshitshit. tell me you know what to do about this!!!!!!!

word to the sarcasm/irony. almost everything i do, i do ironically...

I like you. Let's be buds. Mmmkay?

I was totally going to do a joke entry where I said I loved Rush Limbaugh and we had to defriend immediately, except I literally COULD NOT BARE to even TYPE the words.

Hahaha. I could never be an actor, clearly.

*squeaks*

I would love one, but I wasn't going to ask you because I thought you might be swamped. If you have time, I'd be delighted. You know what I want in it:-P Beyond that, I don't give a crap how it looks.

No. Get the fuck off my el jay.

Look at my new icon. It's not that well done visually but it amuses me inordinately.

[identity profile] leigh57.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Not gonna lie -- I still love me a little for my Rush Limbaugh line in the Elliot/Olivia story Katie coerced me into writing. Oy. Few things make me homicidal, but he is among them. . .
ext_407935: (Love Actually)

[identity profile] leigh57.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
hahahahaha. Are you drunk? Huh? HUH? You must be drunk if you're on LJ. But seriously you like jcrew? I might have to defriend you. *thinks about the fact that I've worn the same pair of Old Navy jeans for like five days running.* Hee!

Oooh mail! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uh, wow. Student in a bar. See this never happened to me, because I was old, boring, and married by the time I was teaching, and not in bars much. Except in Bethesda, and I never ran into students. Hmmmm. AWKWARD. Sorry about that. Eep.

Sarcasm/irony FTW. No clue how anyone survives life without massive doses of both. And now off to find more effing coffee. . . . I miss you!

That's what I'm gonna have to do in January. It's a good warning. Your squee can get messy.

*snugs you back*

Great list.

Two things I love are reason and science. I don't claim to be very good at either, but I love it when they triumph over religion and pettiness. Can we have more of that please?

I'm not a pacifist. A nation should be able to defend itself. But world peace would be really, really, good.

In what way do you hate Nationalism? I have a healthy amount of Patriotism for Canada,is that the same?

I TRY not to be materialistic, but I do like stuff.

The Republicans are so easy to mock. The Senate is voting on the health care bill today. I totally don;t get why anyone who isn't an insurance executive wouldn't want universal health care.

And yes, Obama is still my hero.

[identity profile] leigh57.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well this certainly isn't an exhaustive list of things I love. It's just what made the top cut in the five minutes I was writing this entry. As I said, at some point I might expand it. We'll see. I love the results of science and reason, but I'm so spectacularly bad at both that it's sad.

I'm not a pacifist either, but my feelings on that subject are conflicted. As for the nationalism, I'm not sure I'm even answering the question you're asking, but I'll try. What I hate is people considering themselves superior because of their nationality. This is one of the reasons I wanted to hide so much during the Bush years. It was like, "We're America and we're the best, so fuck you!" Obama is truly refreshing in this regard. I don't know. I get scared by what people will do in defense of national pride. As far as I'm concerned everybody has the same worth. /rant.

You know? My lack of materialism isn't a virtue. I just don't like stuff.

Amusingly enough, Obama's not really my hero. I support him to the max, but I'm always going to be a Hillary girl at heart. What I want is for everybody in Washington to stop dicking around and do something that's good for the country, rather than what they think is good for their political parties. Wow I can get going, no?

[identity profile] marinw.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
What I hate is people considering themselves superior because of their nationality.

I feel the same way about Religious people.

Hilary does seem to be doing well as Secretary of State. Afganistan is such a mess. Oy.

And on a unrelated topic, Don't forget to vote

I actually am religious, or at least I have a belief system, but I'm about as far as you can get from considering mine superior to anyone else's. The crap people do in the name of God. It's fucked.

KIEFER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yay for family and friends and books and words and ideas and irony and sarcasm and laughing at idiocy and...yeah, basically everything on your list. XD And Christmas!!! (Which I noticed you set the date as on this entry. FTW!)

Intolerant people make me angry.

[identity profile] century-fox.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG I love your icon so much. Love Actually is one of my favorite movies ever. My aunt, uncle, mom, and I watch it every year during the Christmas season.

LOL. Again, all Adrienne. She has a non-Christmas version also, which I need to upload. She makes all my good icons and I just steal them. Completely true story. I ADORE Love Actually. I have large portions of it already memorized. I love that M adores it too and will watch it with me:)

Dorky Christmas lovers of the world UNITE!!!
Word!!! *high five* I saw Christmas funfetti cake mix in Wegmans (supermarket) the other day and was like OMG WANT.

Intolerant people suck. Does that make me intolerant? *ponders*
XD I was actually thinking that...I was like "By not being able to tolerate intolerant people, doesn't that make me intolerant?"

*stares at your icon, wondering how Kiefer manages to make smoking look so sexy*

Did you just tell me what WEGMANS is? You know where I LIVE. *dies laughing*

Although you know what? I've never been in one. Which is amazing. I hate grocery stores.

"By not being able to tolerate intolerant people, doesn't that make me intolerant?"

I don't even know who Sean Hannity is. I'm assuming that's a good thing? Have I been spared some truly awful right-wing commentary?

Totally with you on the Fundamentalism, of any stripe.

I'm also with you on Materialism, although I have a soft spot for the Dialectical variety as a theory. Just as a theory though, because although I'm not religious, I refuse to believe that matter is all that matters.
ext_407935: (Skinner surrounded by idiots)

[identity profile] leigh57.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The quality of your life is so much higher without Sean Hannity in it. Trust me on this. I am only exposed to him when I'm forced to listen to Fox News at my sister's house (my BIL is a huge Republican) in MD. *psychs up for Thanksgiving*

Hee you're going WAY more academic with your definition of "materialsm" than I am. And also giving me grad school PTSD;) I only meant materialism as in an excessive love of things. hahahaha. That's it. Clearly I'm not deep and thoughtful like you:-P

But awwww to matter not being all that matters. I'm so with you on that one.

[identity profile] cybertoothtiger.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. I totally know what you meant; I just like saying "Dialectical Materialism" because I'm a huge philosophy geek. You know I did my MA on the Philosophy of Religion, right?

*sigh*

That was sooooo long ago. I still <3 Hegel. (Yes, I know it was Marx, but Hegel came first.) I was dissapointed with the 24 and Philosophy book because there wasn't an essay on Master and Slave as it applies to Jack and torture. It seemed like such an obvious thing to talk about. And yet - nothing. Bah.
ext_407935: (Mulder what the fuck?)

[identity profile] leigh57.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I did know about your MA. And surprisingly enough, I have a faint memory of studying dialectical materialism in the philosophy section of my integrated studies core in undergrad. Still, it gives me PTSD.

Master and slave! Sigh. I HATE it when philosophy books don't talk about that;)

Oh my god I am become a vegetable. Make me get up. GAH.

[identity profile] cybertoothtiger.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
*Prods*

Get up, dammit!

Did that help? Didn't think so.

Grad school was so traumatic. I'm incredibly impressed that you managed to carry on. I witnessed one too many turf war on whose thesis about one verse of the Bible was the definitive one to want to spend my life in academia. Blerg. There's no way I could go back now. Although some undergrad courses might be fun.

OMG - I could be the older student that everyone hates because she only has the one course and has all the time in the world to work on it, and it's so unfair for the rest of the students who are carrying a full courseload!

I am intolerant of intolerant people. Do I still pass the friend test?

And yes, I totally used this icon to sway your answer.
