I can't figure out embedding because of course this has something to do with Apple (love you Apple, but your proprietariness is a pain in my ass!), but the new Hunger Games trailer is here. You do have to scroll down past some fan reaction vids, in case you were wondering.

Thoughts? But waugh, the salute. My heart, my heart.

This looks really cool! Of course I didn't read the book, so I have no basis of comparison. That guy I did the presentation with has been sorta hilariously bugging me to read them. He's reading them now and is ridiculously obsessed.

I meant to ask if I could borrow your books because they're always out at the lib.

Anyway, I think this looks really cool. It makes me want to read the books before the movies start coming out.

Dang, you should have taken The Hunger Games home with you when you came to hide out from the great CT blackout of 2011. Meh.

I don't blame the dude, only in the sense that if you're into that sort of thing, they're ridiculously compelling. Dark as fuck by the time you get to the end, but really compelling. They hit a lot of my literary kinks in a big way, and one thing I especially liked is the way that the books de-emphasized sex (which is not usually me, I know, but it's a long story). I hope the movies do the same.

Ack, if you had read the first book you'd know what I mean about the salute. It almost made me cry just watching the trailer.

Is that her little sister? The reason she volunteers? That part made me want to cry and I don't even know the characters.

Yeah, she volunteers to take Prim's place. It's so WAUGH.

AUGH. God. I'm sure it hits all of your epic selfless kinks. I like who they picked to play her.

AND HARD, YES. (see icon)

I actually like who they picked to play her too, but from this trailer I'm really "eh" on the guys, especially the one they chose to play Gale. He's uh, supposed to be kinda dark and hot. At least that's the impression I got from the books . . .

may the odds be ever in your favor

UGH THAT GAVE ME BIG FEELINGS. I had read a bunch about how JL is too old to play Katniss, but now that I've seen her in action I totally disagree.

(Wait, talk to me about your feelings on how they de-emphasize sex! GO.)

THE SALUTE GIVES ME SO MANY BIG FEELINGS THAT I WANT TO SIT HERE AND CRY JUST THINKING ABOUT IT.

But I can't because I'm at work, so.

Well, don't you think they de-emphasize sex? What I'm saying is that usually, when they write books about teenage girls, it's all Twatlight ahoy. Katniss is such a different animal (bwah, so to speak), in that she seems to shy away from everything sexual about herself. I was so haunted (and touched -- let me not lie) by the way she and Peeta sleep together and don't have sex.

I guess that to me (I MENTIONED SPOILERS, RIGHT?), the fact that Katniss and Peeta rarely touch each other throughout the whole series makes it that much more epic to me. It's more that they get together not because of some undeniable chemical attraction, but because nobody else has lived through what they have and it's as if neither of them can psychologically survive without that backup.

AM I MAKING ANY SENSE AT ALL?

Feel free to say no;)

And Donald Sutherland is in it as some Old Authority Figure Guy!

I love a good dystopia.

Ahahaha, icon!

Have you not read these books? Because if you have not, I really really really think you should!

Donald Sutherland is playing President Snow. He should be PERFECT.

Yep, I've read the books. From what I can tell from that trailer, the adaption seems pretty faithful.

I too thought Jennifer Lawrence is too old to play a teenager. I should be used to this from Gossip Girl and all the other shows where teens are played by actors well into their 20's.

I find it so interested that all this fabulous violent YA fic is being published at a time where there is also a lot of press about how kids are over-protected and helicoptered.

SPOILERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Of course the second I picked up the book, I knew they'd make a movie, and my giant terror was that it would be all about some playboy bunny running around the forest half-naked, sprayed with that glycerin stuff so she could shine while she shot things. UGH. It looks as if they have not gone that route, for which I am grateful. I've never seen Jennifer Lawrence in anything, so I'm not sure how I feel about her age in terms of the part.

My experience is that most parents spin their helicopter blades a lot more about sex than they do violence. I'm the other way around -- I actually made N stop reading these after the first book because I knew how upset he'd get when hugely important characters started dying. He was upset enough over Rue.

Hee, yay fun icons!

(Ahhhhh, check out Winter's Bone when you can. Your faith in what Lawrence can do as Katniss will be more than reinforced.)

Cool! I'll have to go look at it on Netflix. I'm always trying to find good stuff to move up the queue, because I'm so damn PICKY.

As I said somewhere else in this post, I'm not worried as much about the Katniss casting as I am the guys. I'm mostly reserving judgment for the moment, or trying to.

I can only recommend it, bb! It is ... guh. I may also be a little biased 'cause she's from Louisville, so it's also a little bit Kentucky girl makes good, but, fffffff.

You know, I'm gonna be reserving judgment on the guys, myself; I'm not quite sure how I feel about the casting. But! I can say that dark-haired kid playing Peeta -- his name is Josh, and I am too lazy to open up an IMDb tab (which is, uh, sad) -- was PHENOMENAL in The Kids Are All Right. If you haven't seen that? OH MY GOD. It is absolute love, distilled and preserved on DVD. <333

Suckas.

Okay. Well yet another thing to add to my long list of shit that's been recced. And I'm glad to hear that maybe Peeta will be okay, because I care more about that than about Gale.

Like Adrienne, I haven't read the books, so I can't really say anything as to how they seem to represent them, but the trailer does look pretty awesome! I hope it will do the books justice. :) I really need to read those books sometime- I've pretty much failed at reading for fun over the past few years, but I'm finally reading a book called I Was Told There'd Be Cake by Sloane Crosley, which I'm really enjoying so far.

The books honestly are super dark, especially as you go on. I mean there's light in a way? But it's one of the most dystopian series I've ever read. However, I adored them and couldn't put them down. I haven't blown through books that quickly in ages. I read all three of them in something like ten days.

I fail at reading lately too, believe me. I have like four books on the shelf behind me I totally should be reading. Given that I can't write, I should pick one up! LOL.

I've read I Was Told There'd Be Cake! She has such an amusing perspective on New York City life. I'll be interested to see what you think when you're done. ♥
