Fandom 2012

In the (approximate, since I lack her flair -- get it?) style of
lowriseflare, my fandom wishlist for 2012:
1. for Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson to costar in a delightful two hour BBC comedy that has nothing to do with death, pain, alcoholism, or emo of any kind and in which they have metric craptons of well-acted eyesex
2. for Annie Wersching to land a monumentally badass role in a new TV show that is (for once) good, and for her costar to be hot
3. for Justified to keep doing exactly what it's doing, complete with emo!Winona, awesome!Art, lots of complicated bromance between Boyd and Raylan, and meatier storylines for Tim and Rachel
4. for Touch to be as fantabulous as it looks in this trailer. Or in lieu of that, for it to be totally terrible but still stay on TV so I can hear Kiefer talk every week:)
5. for someone to find and put all over youtube A) all the 8x17 nookie footage that hit the cutting room floor B) the gag reels from every single season of 24 or, even better, C) all of the above
6. for me to find the courage to watch the end of BSG
7. for Brandi Carlile to release a new CD already, and then come tour near my home 12 times
8. for Allison Janney to have her own show, in which she plays A) POTUS B) a lifelong New Yorker forced to relocate to Birmingham, AL, C) a bounty hunter, or D) anything
My list is actually pretty short;) What about you guys? Fandom wishes for 2012?

Date: 2012-01-12 02:26 pm (UTC)2. Fringe, but more specifically John Noble to finally get acknowledgement of their existence and respect deserved from the Emmys.
3. For me to quit procrastinating and making lame excuses and to get off my lazy ass and WRITE/POST SOME FUCKING FANFIC GODDAMMIT.

Date: 2012-01-12 02:36 pm (UTC)I know you're not even a little bit alone in wanting Fringe to get the recognition it deserves. I'll hope that for you, too. And hell yes, for a decent sendoff. Why is the damn dismount always so hard?

Date: 2012-01-12 04:32 pm (UTC)But so many people were disappointed in a million different things, and I was just like, DUDE. No show can do absolutely everything. I have high standards, but some people are freakin' ridiculous.

Date: 2012-01-12 04:48 pm (UTC)Did Chris Carter and co. have adequate advance notice they were ending the show when they did and to plan accordingly?
One big difference (and not to sound like I'm dissing XF, because I'm not, I like both shows) was that Fringe's mythology was as I understand it from word of Abrams and co. preplanned while XF seemed to, as so many say, make it up as they went along. They knew where Fringe was going to end from Day One and I think the viewers should see the ending that was envisioned.
I agree that its impossible to please everyone, especially when they have unreasonable expectations. One thing that gets me about the Fringe fandom is that on one hand you have people rail against the fact that ratings suck balls and people don't watch, and then you have the very same people insist they are ready to jump ship the minute the show does something they don't like (this season, for example, is very controversial) and I always want to proverbially smack them and ask what do they think Fringe might be replaced with if it went off the air? Another intelligent, well-written, well-acted, character-driven Sci-Fi series, or another clone doctor/lawyer/cop procedural or reality show? Fringe on a bad day is still better than 99% of the genuine shit out there.

Date: 2012-01-12 05:14 pm (UTC)Yeah, that's exactly how I feel about Justified.
One thing I notice from what you're saying though is this -- again it's in the trying to please everyone. For example, I'm sure a lot of the hardcore Peter/Olivia shippers are put off by aspects of this season, unless a lot has gone on that I've missed (which is totally possible).
If what you want is amazing mythology, I don't doubt that Fringe is doing it better than XF did it. I was always there for the love, and as far as I'm concerned, that's where Chris Carter knew to be smart (oh and no, I don't think he had a clue where it was ultimately going). He never once messed with that central relationship, so at least he always had one core set of fans who stayed happy. Because the shipping aspect of Fringe is less central, it's probably a great deal more difficult to decide which fans to please.

I miss Allison Janney so much. Which is a little hilarious since I never even watched TWW.

Okay then;)
I think I must be missing something in the female genetic code, because I cannot get the Hugh Jackman thing for love or money. But that's okay.
no subject
Date: 2012-01-13 12:41 am (UTC)He does look rather spiffy in that one. I don't use it very often, but it's oh-so-pretty.
And you really are missing something. The guy is just...le sigh. Oh the things he does to my insides (and outsides, really, if I'm being honest)>
no subject
Date: 2012-01-13 02:01 pm (UTC)Hee, you can be honest. I'm giggling my butt off during this S7 rewatch at just how happy it makes me (all of me;) to hear Kiefer say, "The following takes place between . . ."
GUH.
And idk about Hugh Jackman. I mean to be fair, I haven't seen any of the stuff that apparently really makes the ladies (and some gents of course -- my journal is a safe space!) swoon. I should watch one and then report back. If you were going to recommend a film designed to induce Hugh Jackman lust, what would it be?
no subject
Date: 2012-01-13 02:51 pm (UTC)The Fountain, hands down. It's wonderful for a number of reasons (Hugh Jackman's hottness aside) - the acting and chemistry from both the leads are great (can I be Rachel Weisz when I grow up, please?), the cinematography (they had me at the first sepia-toned scene), the special effects (no CGI, only sound stages, lighting tricks and blown-up clips of petri dish bacteria), the soundtrack (oh, the soundtrack - I would marry it if such unions were recognized by the state).
When you watch it, you just have to watch, don't try to figure anything about. Worry about what's actually going on during subsequent views, but the first time through, you just...let yourself be in the moment of the movie. I'm laughing at how ridiculously zen that sounds, but it's really how you have to go about it. There's so much going on that won't make sense, that you get distracted by what you don't understand instead of seeing the picture as a whole. It's kind of like, choose your own ending/meaning. For me, it's about how you can't truly live and appreciate life until you finally accept your mortality - that you won't live forever, so that you should cherish what you have here and the time you have here.

Date: 2012-01-13 03:25 pm (UTC)Those are the ones! That picture is my iPod wallpaper. True story.
Why have I not even heard of this movie? My pop culture rock is so damn big. But if it has Rachel Weisz, I won't have any trouble getting M to watch it;) So I'll put it in the Netflix queue. Thanks for the rec!

Date: 2012-01-13 03:06 pm (UTC)The problem is that Kiefer's arms are covered with tattoos that don't always match his characters. The makeup must be a headache because touching K's arms must be such an unpleasant task! So we will always see him in long sleeves no matter the climate.
As long as the paparazzi are interesting in stalking him we should be good!
Re: *threadjacks*
Date: 2012-01-13 03:27 pm (UTC)Yeah, I always thought about that when they did naked or half naked scenes with him on 24 (most of which involved torture or bioweapon infestation, woe). I'm assuming it will be less of an issue in Touch, because he has to wear worn out henleys:)

Date: 2012-01-12 06:10 pm (UTC)Hey, total aside, but what music do your boys like? J wants to learn some songs on the guitar, and he's mostly into pop and hip-hop, which, um, yeah. He doesn't like my music, of course.
Okay, back to the list. I would like, in no particular order:
1. Richard Dean Anderson to guest star on Burn Notice.
2. A movie of The Ranger's Apprentice with Kiefer playing Halt, the small but deadly master Ranger who rides horses and is sneaky and deadly with a bow and arrow. In fact, maybe I'll write to the author and suggest it, it would be THAT GOOD.
3. For me to find the time to catch up on Justified and Fringe (thank you, BTW, for keeping your comments about the latter spoiler-free. It's more than I deserve.)
4. For there to never be a Cherub movie.
5. For the 24 movie to die a quiet death.
6. For there to be a new, awesome, spy series with hotness and a sense of humour but not farcical. Allison Janney could be in it, or Annie. Or both!
7. For Mad Men to be back with new episodes in time for gin and tonic season.

Date: 2012-01-12 06:32 pm (UTC)My kids listen to . . . very eclectic things because we listen to very eclectic things. They of course enjoy the current terrible pop (to which I mostly ugh, but I do enjoy some of it), pretty much anything 80s that isn't horribly emo, standard stuff like Aerosmith and Def Lepard (sp? Why do I not know that?). Mostly if it has a decent beat, they like it.
Which of course rules out all my faves (Sarah, Brandi, Emmylou, Lucinda, Patty, Alison), which they have conveniently labeled "donkey music." Heh. S wants to play the guitar too. I think his hands are too small.
Why do I not even know what The Ranger's Apprentice is? Yikes. But I'd watch it if Kiefer were in it;) And no problem about the spoiler-free Justified comments. I don't think
What's a Cherub? And don't say a baby angel.
The 24 movie is happening, so I guess we'll see how that all shakes out. OY.
I tried with Mad Men. I really really really did. Watched almost two seasons of it! But finally I was just like, you guys are all too depressing and self-absorbed for me to spend time with you. Although you do have nice suits.

Date: 2012-01-12 06:49 pm (UTC)OMG - The Ranger's Apprentice! They're a series of books about a young orphan in a Tolkien-esque land who really wants to be a knight but is too small. So instead he apprentices to be a Ranger, who are the secret service of the land. It's awesome. They sneak around with bows and arrows and have clever horses. I'm reading the first one to the boys, and even A is spellbound. It does have lots of battle stuff, which I don't know how you feel about in books? I see they are making a movie of it, with Paul Haggis at the helm, so that's encouraging. No casting decisions yet.
Cherub is another series about teenage spies in modern England. It's depressing as fuck, as they have to infiltrate crime rings, and the life of the modern British housing project teenager is... depressing as fuck. Very social realist, and the main character is a bit of a knob. I think because the author is a bit of a knob. Lots of smoking and underage drinking and the 12 year old protagonist is always trying to get girls to snog. It's fascinating and I can't put them down, but I wish I'd pre-read before I let A read them. No way am I letting J read them.
Ugh, 24 movie. Do Not Want.
I only watch Mad Men because it is so visually stunning. It's the perfect late summer night TV with a G&T at the end of a hard day of hanging at the pool.

Date: 2012-01-12 06:23 pm (UTC)My fandom wishlist:
1. For Season 3 of Luther to air, or at least be made, this year
2. For Kanye to guest star on Parks and Rec
3. For The Good Wife writers to figure out what they're doing with Cary's character (I feel like the latest episode showed potential for that *keeps fingers crossed*) Also, Cary/Kalinda.
4. For Diane Lockhart (on The Good Wife) to continue to get lots of screentime where she can be a BAMF, just like she did in the most recent episode
♥

Date: 2012-01-12 06:34 pm (UTC)Is Luther one of those BBC things where they make four hours of it and then make four more two years later? I can't believe how they handle Sherlock, and I'm so glad I'm not a rabid fan because I'd be crazy.
OMG Kanye on P&R. That would be so funny.
I don't even know who Diane is! Wow, my pop culture fail is so epic. It only gets more epic with each passing minute. WOE. &hearts

Yeah, haha (although series 1 had six episodes). Ruth Wilson, who plays Alice, mentioned in an interview that she and Idris Elba want to make a third series to wrap up the show, but I'm not sure when that's going to happen.
I just want her to have a role where she's not wringing her hands and crying, dammit. SHE CAN DO SO MUCH MORE, SO LET HER.

Date: 2012-01-12 09:18 pm (UTC)I also want Touch to contrive a reason for Naked!Kiefer.
I love it when Kiefer talks. I love it when he opens his mouth and words come out.
Did you notice the fake 24 film trailer on the sidebar to your link.? Hardeeharhar.

Date: 2012-01-12 10:54 pm (UTC)Why am I doubting we'll see naked!Kiefer in Touch? I WISH. Maybe the movie?
I didn't notice the fake 24 film trailer. But usually there are so many of them that I just tune it out. Was it especially funny?

Date: 2012-01-12 11:07 pm (UTC)The fake 24 trailer was not particularly funny, just some action movie cut with Jack looking badass.
Kiefer wasn't naked Melancholia either. *mopes*
Fannish wishes for 2012: wherein you see just how many shows I keep track of
Date: 2012-01-13 11:20 am (UTC)Hawaii 5-0: for Lori to have a point and for Kono to have more scenes and a storyline in general. Grace Park (Boomer/Athena from BSG) is being wasted on this show. Le sigh.
Castle: for Kate and Rick to open up about their secrets and progress their relationship already. We already know they're in it to win it, so I'd like for them to start showing us more of them testing the waters to tell each other the S4 secrets already.
Glee: for Brittany and Santana to finally have a conversation about their relationship since Santana's outing, have an actually, honest-to-god, well lit, onscreen kiss, and let them graduate together so I can leave the show with some modicum of relief. Oh and for them not to mess up Mike Chang.
Warehouse 13: bring back HG Wells. I am going to be crushed if they don't bring her back.
Revenge: for Fauxmanda to go away, I'd originally say for Declan and Charlotte to have a point, but Charlotte just became 100% more relevant to the revenge plot, so...yeah.
Nikita: for the show to go back to Alex and Nikita's relationship rather than the angstfest of Michael and Nikita. I signed up for that show for the action, and the show works best when the two of them have intertwined storylines. Physical distance is fine, but their relationship is the core of the show, and it's annoying that they have gotten away from that.
Fringe: For them to get a full order of one more season to wrap up everything well in S5. Like Tim, I think that it has a shelf life of 5 seasons, and I just want Olivia to find her happiness- all incarnations of her. I'm already getting an Astrid centric ep, so I'm psyched for that, and I'm not too worried about the new Amberverse. I just want them to tell the story they want to tell and conclude the way it should.
I watch more shows, but I am mostly happy with where they are right now.
I really do need a TV icon.
My response: wherein I wonder when you eat, sleep, and brush your teeth
Date: 2012-01-13 02:11 pm (UTC)That sucks that Grace Park is being wasted, but honestly, isn't that show pretty terrible? It seemed pretty terrible when I powered through some of for Annie.
I am so curious as to what will eventually happen with Castle. I realize it's one of those shows that's technically a "will they or won't they" except that clearly they will. My curiosity arises from the fact that it's a serious trick to keep a show that thrives on sexual tension working once you let the characters do the wild thing. But on the flip side, if the show stays on the air and you don't let them, you risk becoming just ridiculous and driving the viewers batshit insane in the process. Castle (I assume) is successful enough that it will be on for a few more seasons, so yeah. I'm just wondering.
I am 100% wishing goodness for all my Fringe watching f-listers. You guys deserve a show that winds up properly, man.
Re: My response: wherein I wonder when you eat, sleep, and brush your teeth
Date: 2012-01-13 02:40 pm (UTC)OH WAIT. That is one more fannish thing I want. I hope that the new Avatar the Last Airbender sequel airs this year and is super awesome. I am so excited for Legend of Korra.
And yes, it's kind of a terrible show, and yet I feel compelled to watch it, because it seems to be single handedly keeping Asian American actors in Hollywood employed since 2010. On occasion it can be decent, but mostly it's wasted potential.
Castle is hitting that point of shit or get off the pot. I agree that there's a fine line, but somewhere around the 4 year mark, something has to give. I think people are mistaken when they think that shows that thrive off of sexual tension can't survive once the chase is over, because it assumes that the chase holds all the excitement. Getting together is really only the beginning.
And I watch all these shows when I do the laundry. I brush twice daily sometimes while checking mail. I clearly like multi-tasking. Hehe.
Re: My response: wherein I wonder when you eat, sleep, and brush your teeth
Date: 2012-01-13 03:31 pm (UTC)Oh, agreed 100%. I think I didn't make myself clear in my comment. More like, I don't think writers know how to handle this well for the most part. I haven't seen many situations in which it worked. This is one thing that I loved about Tony and Michelle -- they were together, but there were all sorts of other points of conflict and it just worked. I could be wrong (I'm mostly talking out of my ass here, because I have never seen Castle -- I just talk to people about it), but it seems riskier on Castle just because of the nature of the show. If they let Rick and Kate knock boots, they'll just have to be careful where they take the story from there. It CAN be done, no question.
Ahahahaha, you check your mail while you brush your teeth. Amazing.
Re: My response: wherein I wonder when you eat, sleep, and brush your teeth
Date: 2012-01-13 05:30 pm (UTC)Besides, I don't know what other people do while brushing their teeth. Do you just look at yourself in the mirror the entire time while brushing? Seems like a waste of time.
